Meet the Fringe: Esports News UK

Ahead of London Games Festival, Games London is speaking to some of the creators behind this year’s line-up of exciting and eclectic events

On Saturday 8 April, Esports News UK founder Dom Sacco is organising a meet-up for the local pro-gaming community at Stratford’s Secret Weapon

Dom_sacco_cropTell us a bit about your event.
The esports sector is incredibly digital, and there aren’t many events in the UK for people to get together, other than the major LANs which are few and far between.

This event at the Secret Weapon gaming pub in Stratford, London, will allow the community to gather and network.
There’s a focus on League of Legends, but the event is open to players and people in other games too, including CSGO, Hearthstone, Overwatch and more.

We’ll also have some League of Legends-themed drinks and systems ready for some 1v1 action.

Who is this event for?
It’s essentially a social networking event for people within the UK esports scene, whether that’s fans, players, coaches, casters, managers, fans and so on – it’s free and open to all.

I run the online publication Esports News UK, so readers of that are also more than welcome to come along.

Why should people come along?
For banter and memes. No seriously, to have fun and chill out in laid-back environment. Also, networking can be valuable and open doors.

Why were you keen to be involved in London Games Festival?
I think it’s great the Mayor of London backs this event – and it’s an honour to be one of many events forming the festival. Strength in numbers. The video games sector is fantastic and I’m thrilled to be helping to represent it in London.

What events have you done before?
As editor of tech trade publication PCR between 2013 and 2016, I chaired various conferences and hosted awards bashes over the years. I’ve also spoken about esports at other conferences including the SBC News sports betting conference. I have also covered events during my time on trade publications MCV and ToyNews.

What games do you enjoy?
League of Legends. League of Legends. And… League of Legends.

I think it’s the best game of this generation: tactical, hard to master and bags of fun. Just gotta learn to ignore the trolls and flamers (and in my case, git gud).

I’m also a big fan of gaming in general, and RPGs and adventure games like Skyrim, The Legend of Zelda series and World of Warcraft.
